However, there are also <strong>agile models<\/strong> of strategy development (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wonderwerk.com\/en\/strategy\/strategy-development\/#agil\">more on this later<\/a>) that require significantly greater stakeholder participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"farbbox linkrot has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fce0ec\">Most successful companies and organizations develop their strategies with the help of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wonderwerk.com\/en\/strategy\/\">professional strategic management consultants<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_50-30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"warum-wichtig\">Why is strategic management important?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Strategy development is necessary because companies and organizations must <strong>constantly adapt<\/strong> in order to remain competitive in today&#8217;s <strong>challenging<\/strong> working environment. Experts have coined the term \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wirtschaftslexikon.gabler.de\/definition\/vuca-119684\"><strong>VUCA<\/strong><\/a>\u201d to describe this phenomenon:<br><br>Our modern world is <em>volatile<\/em> (<strong>V<\/strong>), <em>uncertain<\/em> (<strong>U<\/strong>), <em>complex<\/em> (<strong>C<\/strong>), and <em>ambiguous<\/em> (<strong>A<\/strong>). In order to survive in such a (business) environment, <strong>a leap in innovation<\/strong> every three or four years is <strong>no longer enough.<\/strong> When done <em>right<\/em>, strategy development is therefore a process that <strong>never ends<\/strong>.<br><br><strong><strong>Strategy development enables companies and organizations to<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>master new challenges<\/strong> in a timely and flexible manner.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>remain capable of acting<\/strong> despite shortages on many levels (financial resources, human resources, energy, and raw materials).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>remain competitive<\/strong> in a <strong>globalized market<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>continuously optimize<\/strong> their services and\/or offerings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>meet the increasing <strong>demands<\/strong> of their <strong>employees<\/strong> (e.g., for a better <em>work-life balance<\/em> or opportunities for <em>remote work<\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>fulfill<\/strong> <strong>social demands<\/strong> (e.g., in terms of sustainability management).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-leadership-in-transition\"><strong><strong>Leadership in transition<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rotlink\">Ongoing <strong>strategic adaptation <\/strong>is the <strong>basic prerequisite<\/strong> for companies and organizations to <strong>survive<\/strong> in our modern working world. However, the large number of <strong>mass layoffs and liquidations <\/strong>in recent decades has shown that not all organizations are able to <strong>see this change as an opportunity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rotlink\">We can therefore see that successful strategy development often requires a <strong>rethinking in the area of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wonderwerk.com\/en\/leadership\/what-is-leadership\/\"><strong>leadership<\/strong><\/a> (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wonderwerk.com\/en\/agility\/\"><strong>Agile Working<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-strategy-development-vs-change-management\"><strong><strong>Strategy development vs. change management<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy development<\/em> and <em>change management<\/em> are often mentioned in the same context, but they are not the same thing. In fact, change management is often <strong>part of strategy development<\/strong>:<br><br>Change management comes into play when it comes to <strong>planning and implementing<\/strong> a <strong>specific change<\/strong>. Change processes involve the <strong>active management of change<\/strong> and take place within a <strong>fixed time frame<\/strong>, while strategy development is an <strong>ongoing process<\/strong> that can integrate many (smaller) change processes depending on its scope and phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"farbbox linkrot has-background\" id=\"rotlink\" style=\"background-color:#fce0ec\">In our article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wonderwerk.com\/en\/change-management\/change-management-definition-prozess\/\"><strong>change management<\/strong><\/a>, you can read in detail about <strong>how change management<\/strong> <strong>works<\/strong> in companies and organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_50\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"wie-funktioniert\">How does strategy development work?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"linkrot\">Strategy work is <strong>not detached <\/strong>from day-to-day operations, but rather a recurring <strong>task<\/strong> that runs <strong>cyclically<\/strong>: Only companies and organizations that <strong>continuously question the status quo<\/strong> can <strong>continuously optimize<\/strong> their structures and processes and thus adapt them to the prevailing conditions.<br><br>This process begins with a <strong>strategic analysis<\/strong> or diagnosis of the <strong>initial situation<\/strong>: Where do we currently stand in terms of<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_50-30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the <strong>market<\/strong> or our <strong>niche<\/strong> (for companies)?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>our <strong>(business) environment<\/strong>: What <strong>trends <\/strong>do we see? What are the social, political, and legal <strong>framework conditions<\/strong>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our <strong>customers<\/strong>: What do our current customers want? Is there a <strong>potential customer base<\/strong> that we are not currently reaching?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Goal achievement<\/strong>: Are there any goals that we did not achieve in the last cycle? If so, what was the reason? What can we do better this time?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Internal resources<\/strong>: Where do our <strong>strengths<\/strong> lie, what are our <strong>weaknesses<\/strong>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_50-30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rotlink\">In the classic top-down model, only <strong>management<\/strong>, selected <strong>executives<\/strong>, and, if necessary, selected <strong>stakeholders<\/strong> are involved in this strategic and analytical preparatory work.<br><br>Most companies and organizations also bring in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wonderwerk.com\/en\/strategy\/\"><strong>specialists for strategic development<\/strong><\/a> to provide the urgently needed <strong>\u201coutside perspective\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_50-30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"phasen\">Phases in the strategy development process<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_50-30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>From the \u201ccurrent state\u201d to <strong>lived, firmly implemented change<\/strong>, companies and organizations go through <strong>various phases<\/strong> in the strategy development process. The number of these phases and their names <strong>vary<\/strong> depending on the strategy model (<strong>see below<\/strong>) that the company or organization is following.<br><br>The following illustration is taken from the book <strong>\u201cStrategieentwicklung kurz und klar\u201d<\/strong> (Strategy Development in a Nutshell) by Gudrun Sander and Elisabeth Bauer. What risks and opportunities are presented by current economic, social, political, and other developments?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_50-30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-listitem listbox\"><div><span class=\"listbut\">3.<\/span><\/div><div class=\"listboxtext\"><h5><strong>Design phase:<\/strong><\/h5><div class=\"spacer_10\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>What strategy or strategies do we need to <em>fully utilize<\/em> our resources, <em>further develop<\/em> our strengths, and <em>avert<\/em> any risks? In this phase, we formulate our <em>short-, medium-, and long-term strategic goals<\/em>, among other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_50-30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-listitem listbox\"><div><span class=\"listbut\">4.<\/span><\/div><div class=\"listboxtext\"><h5><strong>Implementation phase:<\/strong><\/h5><div class=\"spacer_10\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rotlink\">How do we implement the necessary<strong>\\-<\/strong>changes? What <em>specific steps<\/em> are necessary for this (see also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wonderwerk.com\/en\/change-management\/change-management-definition-prozess\/\"><strong>Change Management<\/strong><\/a>)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_50-30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-listitem listbox\"><div><span class=\"listbut\">5.<\/span><\/div><div class=\"listboxtext\"><h5><strong>Evaluation:<\/strong><\/h5><div class=\"spacer_10\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>How can we<em> measure<\/em> the <em>effectiveness<\/em> of our strategy? This phase is about defining <em>success<\/em><strong><em>\\-<\/em><\/strong><em>factors and quality<\/em><strong><em>\\-<\/em><\/strong><em>criteria<\/em>. Evaluation is <em>not retrospective<\/em> in strategy<strong>\\-<\/strong>work, but <em>ongoing<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ongoing-evaluation-ensures-flexibility\"><strong><strong>Ongoing evaluation ensures flexibility<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_40\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>practice<\/strong>, the individual phases of strategy<strong>\\-<\/strong>development cannot, of course, <strong>be clearly separated from one another<\/strong>. Ongoing evaluation also ensures that<strong>\\-<\/strong>sometimes<strong>\\-gaps in the process<\/strong> become visible<strong>\\-<\/strong>. For example, it may<strong>\\-<\/strong>become apparent during the conception<strong>\\-<\/strong>phase that not all the information required to formulate a strategy is available. In this case, the process goes <strong>back<\/strong> from the conception phase to the analysis phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_50\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"methoden\">Strategy development &#8211; Methods<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>process of strategy development<\/strong> varies from company to company and from organization to organization. The approach depends, among other things, on the <strong>type <\/strong>of company or organization, the <strong>challenges<\/strong> it faces, and whether the company\/organization operates in a <strong>classic top-down dynamic<\/strong> or an <strong>agile leadership and goal management framework<\/strong>.<br><br>For this reason,<strong>\\-<\/strong>various methods and<strong>\\-<\/strong>different<strong> models for strategy development<\/strong> have emerged over the years, which differ depending on the<strong>\\-<\/strong>perspective,<strong>\\-<\/strong>goals (e.g., market<strong>\\-<\/strong>economy, resource, or innovation<strong>\\-<\/strong>oriented), and<strong>\\-<\/strong>implementation. The<strong>\\-<\/strong>best-known methods are those developed by <em>Porter<\/em>, <em>Mintzberg<\/em>, and the <em>STEP analysis<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-industry-structure-analysis-according-to-porter\"><strong><strong>Industry structure analysis according to Porter<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wonderwerk-spacer spacer_30\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"linkrot\">The <strong>industry structure analysis<\/strong> is based on the model developed by <strong>Michael Porter <\/strong>and follows a <strong>market-oriented approach<\/strong>. The focus is on the <strong>optimal positioning<\/strong> of the company\/organization and a structured analysis of the respective industry. The aim is to identify attractive business areas and thereby develop competitive advantages.
